Collection: block-print linen-and-kantha bedspreads

Indian Kantha

Kantha ' is an ancient embroidery craft that originated in the Indian subcontinent. It's mostly practised by the rural women and is passed down from generations. 'Kantha stich' or just 'Kantha ' involves thousands of small, running, intricate stitches done by hand on soft, cotton fabrics. There could be kantha throws , that are just two layers of fabric stitched together, or quilts , that involve fabrics layered with wadding and hand quilted in the running stitching. Then there can be block or screen printed Kantha throws and quilts , where the fabrics are first hand printed and then hand stitched . There is also patch work Kantha made with using two cotton patchwork handblock printed fabric sheets.
On our recent visit to a small cluster in India, we were fortunate to witness the art being practised by the local, rural women. For these women , Kantha quilting is a way of life. On any given day, you ll find groups of women, young and old, chatting and quilting away to glory, creating one masterpiece after another.. For them Kantha quilting is not just a means of livelihood, but a craft that reminds them of their ancestors, mostly mothers and grandmothers, and many years of traditions that they are trying to keep alive.

Wood Block-printing

There are these main aspects of the hand block printing process - the teak wood blocks, the fabric /paper and the natural dye.

The carvers work for days together just to carve an intricate design on a teak wood block . This block is then dipped in natural dyes and printed on the fabric. Separate blocks are required for each color for textiles that have multiple patterns or colors.

Now once the desired patterns are engraved ,the blocks are dipped in natural/vegetable dyes and stamped onto the fabric. Separate blocks are required for each color for textiles that have multiple patterns or colors. It takes years of practice to get the precision that you see in the video. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Cotton, silk and linen are the most commonly used fabrics ,as they can hold the dye better without bleeding.

There is another block printing technique called "Daboo " or " Mud resist " which is a bit different from the traditional block printing as it uses clay and involves multiple stages of printing , washing and dyeing. We would cover that in another series.

While printing designs on fabric most likely originated in China , the tradition reached its highest visual expression in the Indian state of Rajasthan .

The skill of block printing has been passed down from generations . It's a highly laborious craft that requires meticulous attention , minute detailing and incredibly accurate hand eye coordination.
It can take the carvers many days to create one intricate design on a wood block that is later used as as a printing block. Separate blocks are required for each color and most designs have more than one color.

We teamed up directly with these small time , rural artisans and practitioners of this craft, and created beautiful, sustainable and unique linen for your home. Explore our range below.
